About Us

"Jazz is the result of the energy stored up in America"

What is Swing?
Swing Dance is American's first folk dance, with its origins in the jazz music of the 1920’s. As jazz music became a  more prominent part of American culture and spread to different parts of the country, the music and the dances were constantly evolving, and that evolution has continued with the passage of time.
Now, almost 100 years since it's beginning, "swing" is an umbrella term for many different styles of dance that all have their own variations or dialects. Some common styles of swing dance are:
  • Lindy Hop
  • Charleston
  • East Coast
  • West Coast
  • Balboa
  • Shag
  • Blues
Today, swing is more widespread than ever. There are not only swing scenes all over the country, but all over the world and there are events almost year round. Since it is considered a social dance, it is a great way to meet new people and find a little bit of home no matter where you are in the world.

What is Blacksburg Swing Dance?
